Canons: Ace Attorney and Tales of Destiny, set in
cerealia
Rating: G
Despite everyone's mishaps in CereScape during the arrival of the last batch of newcomers, the game remained popular among avid ViViD players as a source of both credits and leisure alike. Then there were the players who had ulterior motives, like Miles Edgeworth, who was chiefly playing for his dog. He hadn't seen the pooch in close to two years, and this was his only chance to be with him in Cerealia without having to resort to a CYbuddy replacement.
Usually he had company whenever he played for the insane amount of credits he needed for his beloved pet, but today, he had logged in on his own. He wasn't alone for long, however.
When Edgeworth entered the nearest tavern in town in search of food and drinks with healing properties after several grueling quests, he was surprised to see a youth with a mop of yellow hair waving at him from a nearby table. A second chair was occupied by a sword.
“Mr. Edgeworth? Mr. Edgeworth!”
He walked over to the blond man, a little confused. He was certain he had seen this man before...
“It's me, Stahn!”
Ah, there we go. Stahn Aileron, was it? Or something like that? “Yes...hello, Stahn,” said Edgeworth, with considerably less enthusiasm. He didn't take the empty seat at the table at first even though his feet were killing him. Instead, he gripped the chair's backrest as he regarded Stahn with heavy-lidded eyes.
“How've you been? It's been a while.”
“Er...I've been well, thank you for asking.”
“You look tired.” Stahn cut to the chase, tilting his head to one side, looking concerned. “Maybe you should have a seat.” He gestured with one gauntleted hand to the chair Edgeworth was leaning on.
The prosecutor shook his head automatically. “No...no, that's quite all right. I just came here to find somethi...”
“But you need to sit down,” Stahn pressed. “You should rest!”
Looks like another stubborn type, Dymlos muttered from his chair. Stahn gave him a brief nod of assent before turning back to Edgeworth.
“I'll be fine...”
“You're not fine!” The swordsman's brow furrowed. “If you don't rest, you could get hurt out there while fighting! And what if you need to run away from something?”
Edgeworth had the sense to relent, and finally pulled out the empty chair to sit down in it. As he did so, he leaned back in it and relaxed, letting out a breath.
“Thank you.”
“You should probably get something to eat, too,” said Stahn, glancing over to the counter at the front. The NPC was busy at a row of kegs, filling several clear bottles with a bright magenta liquid. The tempting aromas wafting from the kitchen were extremely real for a virtual reality game. “Were you on a quest?” He pointed to the top of his head. Though he had a quest and a description the last time the two of them met, today there was nothing.
“No,” Edgeworth replied, taking out a handkerchief to mop his brow.
“So...you just wanted to play a game.”
“No...erm, actually, I did want to play a game, but I have a purpose in mind.”
Stahn looked genuinely perplexed. “What kind of purpose?”
It wasn't that much of a secret, especially among the people he played these games with, so Edgeworth didn't hesitate. “If you earn enough credits in these games, you can exchange them for something from back home. There's...actually, I have a pet dog back home, and I'd like to have him here with me.”
He folded his arms on the table, glancing over at the counter where healing items were bought and sold. He didn't have long to stare, because Stahn spoke up after only a moment.
“Is that so...well, I want to help!” The young man was all smiles. “I'll help you earn enough credits so you can have your dog back.”
“What?” Edgeworth was not expecting assistance to fall into his lap today, so this took him by surprise. “You don't have t - “
“It's okay! That way, you don't have to push yourself so hard.” CereScape was certainly much closer to the world Stahn called home than the real world in Cerealia.
“Stahn...”
“We'll work together. Don't worry! And I'll start helping you by getting you a healing potion.” Stahn pushed away from the table and rose from his seat. “Don't get up! I'll be back real soon!”
Before he could object further, Edgeworth found himself alone at the table with Dymlos, which was quiescent, every inch a typical sword. He sighed, wondering how he always found himself roped with these excitable types.
Still, he had to admit, Stahn would be a big help.
